DSCB Group 6: Safeguarding Supervision for Managers

9.30 - 4.30 Heathfield Community Centre, Heathfield, Newton Abbot
    Group 6

    Target Group:

All Managers who are in the position of providing supervision for staff who are working in the area of safeguarding and child protection

One day course for managers in providing safeguarding supervision for staff.  Focus in on providing supportive challenge, maintaining professional curiosity and clear analysis and risk assessment to ensure effective decision making in clear complex cases.

Serious Case Reviews have highlighted the critical importance of high quality supervision in safeguarding and child protection to enable workers to make effective decisions in complex and challenging situations.  The course will focus on  the importance of remaining child focussed, providing supportive challenge, along with the need to maintain professional curiosity.  Delegates will identify support needed to enable staff to undertake analysis and risk assessments which lead to effective decision making and action.  It will also explore the role of emotion and personal issues which may sometimes impact on the individual dealing with difficult and challenging issues.  Strategies used to unblock cases will be discussed along with how the supervisor may decide which cases need to be discussed.  The training will draw on material from serious case reviews, both local and national, and multi-agency case audits.  The Devon and Torbay Children Boards agreed set of Child Protection Supervision Principles (2015) which are used across the agencies will be used to support the learning.

    Training Objectives:

At the end of the course Managers will be able to:

    • Define effective supervision to be provided to staff working in safeguarding and child protection situations
    • Promote effective multi-agency working during supervision
    • Remain child focussed
    • Identify how safeguarding/child protection supervision fits with organisational supervision polices and procedures
    • Identify how good quality supervision contributes to effective safeguarding and child protection
